Because his lungs were not fully developed, they had trouble fully inflating when he first entered the world. After receiving the surfactant, Quinlan was placed on a CPAP machine for a few days in order to keep the lungs fully inflated. This required wearing a stretchy cap over his head with velcro for the CPAP apparatus to attach to his little nose. In this picture you can see the hat, but dad wanted a picture of baby Q's British nose so the nurse let us take him off for the close-up.
Quinlan was unable to fully rest with the CPAP mask on and needed to be calmed frequently. His night nurse, Stacy (who's married name was Quinlan coincidentally), recommended trying him on a nasal cannula with O2 instead. Since then, he has been much happier and easier to sooth. Stacy may now be his favorite NICU RN!
